2009年9月25日，美海军上将帕特里克·沃尔什正式接任太平洋舰队司令，而前司令罗伯特·维拉德将在这一年的10月份接替基廷出任太平洋司令部司令。沃尔什与维拉德经历相似，在掌管太平洋舰队之前曾是五角大楼海军作战部副部长。

太平洋舰队是美国海军最大的部队，包括180艘舰船、1500架飞机和12.5万名水兵，活动区域从南非东海岸到太平洋东部，覆盖面积超过地球表面一半，其下辖的美海军第七舰队，是直接执行“第一岛链”封锁任务的部队。

美国海军编有两大战略集团，即大西洋舰队和太平洋舰队。太平洋舰队是美海军在亚太地区的主要军事力量，其辖区范围包括整个太平洋、印度洋海域，约9400万平方英里。舰队司令部设在夏威夷的珍珠港；大西洋舰队司令部设在美国东海岸的诺福克，其辖区范围包括整个大西洋和北冰洋的部分海域，以及加勒比海和地中海。
